K9 Hondo
K9 Hondo is a six-year-old German
Shepherd who joined the Mill Creek Police Department in May 2020. Together with his handler, Corporal Nathan Lerma, they have been deployed 189 times, capturing 59 suspects and locating 60 items of evidence, including several firearms.
Hondo and Corporal Lerma, are certified
for skills for obedience, tracking and apprehending suspects.
Generalist/tracking police canine teams undergo 400 hours of training before being certified to state standards and accredited with the Washington State Police Canine Association. Initial training includes but is not limited to obedience, tracking, scent work, suspect apprehension, handler protection, agility, and scenario-based training, which prepares the team for deployments once they are certified. Canine teams are a critically important tool for addressing public safety and criminal activity. In addition to service in Mill Creek, the Mill Creek Police canine unit benefits regional law enforcement partners by assisting other agencies on calls where a canine team is needed to locate or apprehend a fleeing suspect.
